Seven Little Ducklings
Mathical Prize Winner
Math-focused winners and honor books for several age groups.
The Mathical Book Prize recognizes fiction and nonfiction that invites children and teenagers into mathematics. The Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute awards the prize with the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, in coordination with the Children's Book Council. A national panel of librarians, teachers, mathematicians, early childhood specialists, and others chooses books for PreK, K through 2, Grades 3 through 5, Grades 6 through 8, and Grades 9 through 12. Newly published books may win the annual Prize. Books from any year can be named Honor Books, while the Hall of Fame recognizes broader or lasting appeal. These distinctions do not form a simple first-to-last ranking. The grade groups are useful for browsing, though they are not measurements of text complexity. Parents can begin with a grade category and then choose between stories, biographies, puzzles, and other approaches to mathematical thinking. A book need not look like a workbook to make numbers, patterns, logic, or problem solving part of the reading experience.
