During the summer of 1983, June’s father has recently died of AIDS, and her mother’s mental illness worsens as she grieves. Her mother will not leave the house and demands that everything, including June, be cleaned with bleach. June is often hungry and relies on weekly groceries from Uncle Toby. When Ziggy moves nearby with his grandmother, June watches their household and imagines its warmth. Both children are treated as neighborhood outsiders, and they become friends, escaping into a shared imaginative world while June’s situation at home grows more desperate.
