Show Me a Sign
Ann Clare LeZotte
The year is 1805, and Mary’s home is Chilmark on Martha’s Vineyard. Many residents are Deaf, and sign language is familiar throughout the community. Because hearing status does not divide the residents, Mary has never regarded her deafness as a disability. A mainland scientist arrives with prejudiced beliefs, kidnaps Mary, and turns her over to a second scientist for research into why people cannot hear. This historical novel draws on the real Deaf community that existed on the island.
