Sport: Ship Dog of the Great Lakes
Pamela Cameron, illustrated by Renée Graef
In 1914, crew members aboard the lighthouse tender Hyacinth rescue a puppy from the Milwaukee River and name him Sport. For the next twelve years, Sport travels with the ship along Lake Michigan as it marks channels and delivers supplies to lighthouses. He becomes familiar at ports and lighthouses, playing with keepers’ children or setting off to explore. After wandering far enough to be mistaken for a stray, Sport is recognized by a sailor from another vessel and makes his way back to the Hyacinth. The story is fictionalized from the real dog’s life and is followed by information about him.
