This picture-book history connects a 1902 hunting trip, an editorial cartoon, and the creation of the teddy bear. President Theodore Roosevelt refused to shoot a bear cub in Mississippi, inspiring Clifford Berryman’s cartoon. In Brooklyn, Rosie and Morris Mitchom sold candy, sundries, and handmade toys. The cartoon prompted Mrs. Mitchom to sew a stuffed bear called “Teddy’s Bear,” and demand for teddy bears soon grew. An author’s note distinguishes documented facts from conjecture and artistic license.
