This chronological account follows the Statue of Liberty from its earliest idea through its installation on Bedloe Island. French judge Édouard de Laboulaye commissioned sculptor Frédéric-Auguste Bartholdi to make a statue of the Roman goddess Liberty. Bartholdi enlarged his clay models step by step to determine the copper statue’s scale. After the statue arrived in pieces, Americans needed funds for its pedestal. Joseph Pulitzer’s donor-name pledge prompted schoolchildren to contribute pennies.
