Locked in Ice: Nansen’s Daring Quest for the North Pole

This account follows Norwegian scientist and explorer Fridtjof Nansen’s effort to become the first person to reach the North Pole. After extensive preparation, including a ship built for the plan, Nansen and his crew leave in June 1893 with supplies for a long period alone. His strategy is to let the vessel become trapped in pack ice and drift north. When progress is too slow, Nansen and crew member Johansen depart by sled and dog in March 1895. By April they turn south, then rely on one another and their dogs for the following fourteen months.
