Because Miss Tillie has Black hair and dark brown skin like MacKenzie’s, MacKenzie asks her for help caring for her own hair. Miss Tillie helps her shampoo and explains the patience and attention a garden needs as it grows. In the garden, they look at a tall Japanese maple and small succulents, both beautiful though different. MacKenzie comes to understand her hair as something that needs steady care so it can grow and flourish.
