On Isabel’s first night at her grandmother’s house, she feels lonely and uncertain. She does not know her grandmother well and does not know when her father will return. An owl, frog, and mouse appear at her window and lead her outdoors. They tell her about her grandmother, while Isabel shares that her mother lives in another country and writes letters, and that her father is seeking work. As the night gives way to morning, Isabel’s grandmother is waiting for her with reassurance. The story explores a child’s unfamiliar home and family separation.
