Kafka and the Doll

Set in a Berlin park in 1923, this story follows Franz Kafka after he meets Irma, a girl distressed by the disappearance of her doll, Soupsy. Kafka begins sending Irma letters written as if they come from the doll. The letters describe Soupsy’s travels and adventures, then eventually explain that the doll will not return because she is heading toward an Antarctic expedition. As Kafka becomes ill, the correspondence gives Irma a way to face the loss. An author’s note says that Kafka really did write to a girl about a missing doll in the doll’s voice.
