A young narrator expects the winter holidays to bring Grandma, aunts, uncles, cousins, charades, a fire, and Grandma’s pies. A huge snowstorm changes the family’s plans, leaving only Mom, Mama, her brother, and the narrator at home. They make stew, hike through snowy scenery, and play cards after dinner. Although the gathering is quieter than usual and the narrator still misses the pie, the family finds some fun in their altered celebration.
