Yang Warriors

Kao Kalia Yang, illustrated by Billy Thao

In a Thai refugee camp, a group of Hmong children call themselves the Yang Warriors. Inspired by television superheroes, they train under ten-year-old Master Me, a cousin chosen to lead because of how strongly he believes in their strength. Their games and drills include carrying stones on their heads, using sticks as sacred swords, and trying mind control. The narrator is a young girl whose older sister belongs to the group. She learns that the warriors plan a nighttime trip beyond the camp to gather greens for younger children who are hungry.
