Alaina and the Great Play

Alaina, a Black kindergartner, is thrilled to have one line after a second-grade school play. She spends the day rehearsing it in her head and practicing with her mother and teacher. During the performance, Alaina responds strongly to its funny, angry, sad, and joyful scenes. When her moment arrives at the end, the line she has practiced no longer feels large enough for what she wants to express. She goes onstage and improvises instead.
