Winnie’s Great War

Lindsay Mattick, Josh Greenhut, illustrated by Sophie Blackall

Cole asks for a new bedtime story, and his mother tells him more about Winnie, the bear who later inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. The story begins when an orphaned cub is taken in by a hunter’s child and then adopted by Canadian veterinarian Henry Colebourn as he heads toward World War I service. Winnie travels by ship, where she gets along with horses and rats, and later brings companionship to people behind the lines in Europe. When war becomes too dangerous, Colebourn arranges for her to live at the London Zoo, where she meets Christopher Robin Milne.
