Over one summer, sixteen neighborhood children make costumes from cardboard and scraps, adopting identities such as superheroes, knights, robots, and monsters. Their shared imaginative play includes mock backyard battles and stories told from different children’s points of view. The graphic novel moves between the fantasy world they create and their daily lives as they build costumes and navigate family drama, peer conflicts, and social hierarchies. The cast includes children with different ethnicities, body sizes, and gender identities.
