Apple in the Middle

Apple Starkington, who has been raised by her white father and stepmother, never knew her Ojibwe/Michif mother. During a summer on the Turtle Mountain Reservation in North Dakota, she begins learning about her mother and heritage while meeting extended family and community members. Apple’s name carries both an affectionate meaning and a derogatory one used for Native people perceived as white on the inside. As she encounters Native humor and family stories, she explores a part of her life her father has not discussed.
