What Lane?
Torrey Maldonado
Sixth grader Stephen shares a love of superheroes and a close friendship with his next-door neighbor Dan. Stephen, who has a Black father and white mother, has long thought of them as nearly identical despite being treated differently by others. Tension grows when Dan does not challenge racist remarks from his cousin Chad, who taunts Stephen and tries to provoke him. Stephen also feels pulled between his white friends and Black friends, while his parents respond differently to the risks he faces as a Black boy in public.
