Land of the Cranes

Betita, a fourth grader, makes picture poems that pair drawings with words about her feelings and experiences. Her family fled cartel violence in Mexico for the United States, and her father tells stories of Aztlán, the land of cranes. After he is deported, Betita and her pregnant mother are detained while trying to return from the border. Held with other women and children in harsh conditions, Betita is left alone when her mother is hospitalized because of pregnancy complications.
