After Earth becomes uninhabitable, Lan Mifune’s family travels for twenty years to Planet Choom. On arrival, a change in leadership means the Zhuri government no longer welcomes human immigrants. The Zhuri permit Lan’s family to settle as an experiment in whether humans can integrate, but distrust human emotion. Under pressure to fit in, Lan searches for ways to make the Zhuri laugh. Lan’s friend Marf, an Ororo, circulates recordings of Lan’s sister Ila, a former teen singer whose performance expresses deep feeling. The family’s future depends on this uncertain new home.
