They Went Left

Following the end of World War II, eighteen-year-old Jewish survivor Zofia Lederman leaves the hospital where she has been recovering after liberation from Gross-Rosen. She searches for her younger brother, Abek, after learning he might be among survivors at a refugee camp in Germany. There she develops connections with other displaced people, including Josef, while continuing to look for her family. When Abek arrives, he has changed profoundly and remembers little of their earlier life. Their experiences trace different ways survivors and others struggle to cope in the aftermath of the Holocaust.
