The Tide Pool Waits

Candace Fleming

When the ocean tide recedes, warm pools between rocks become temporary homes for many sea creatures. Barnacles, mussels, turban snails, and limpets close themselves against daytime heat, while fish conceal themselves among algae and seaweed. Octopuses, crabs, and shrimp shelter in rocky cracks. When the tide returns, the pool becomes part of the sea again and activity resumes: sea anemones open, shrimp paddle, sea slugs move across sponge, and many animals search for food. Then the water draws back, returning the tide pool to its waiting cycle.
