The Treasure Box

Dave Keane

A girl keeps a private box of found objects, including a smooth stone, snakeskin, feather, and bird’s nest. She enjoys showing each discovery to her grandfather, who studies the items with a magnifying glass before joining her on walks to seek more treasures. When he becomes ill, she takes new finds to share during visits at home and in the hospital. After he dies, she attends his funeral, looks at old photographs, and says goodbye inwardly. For a while, the box that once brought pleasure is tied to sorrow.
