The New Small Person
Lauren Child, illustrated by Lauren Child
Elmore Green enjoys life as an only child, with his belongings and routines arranged just as he likes them. When a new small person arrives, Elmore feels displaced as the younger child grows, disrupts his possessions, eats his jelly beans, follows him, and moves into his room. After Elmore has a bad dream, the small person comforts him. Later, the two work together to arrange a long line of their treasured things, and Elmore recognizes a shared pleasure in the activity.
