In 1885, thirteen-year-old Chinese American Mei lives with her father in a Sierra Nevada lumber camp, where he is the head cook. She hopes to attend college and tells favorite stories to the camp’s younger white and Black children. Her central tale concerns Auntie Po, a formidable Chinese lumber-crew leader and her blue water buffalo, Pei Pei. Mei begins seeing Auntie Po while walking in the woods. After tragedy reaches the camp, stories, friendship, and community help the children face what has happened.
