In Hiroshima in 1970, twelve-year-old Nozomi attends the annual memorial ceremony for people killed by the atomic bomb. Paper lanterns bearing victims’ names are set afloat, but Nozomi notices that one released by her mother has no name. She and her friends learn about losses connected to the bombing, including their art teacher’s fiancée. The students organize an art show that asks classmates to speak with survivors and create artwork from those accounts. Nozomi’s own conversation with her mother reveals more about her family’s past and the people her mother lost.
