Prince Ilian, who loves a fairy named Olia, is banished from a fairy-tale world into ours. In late-1930s France, a Jewish couple takes in the homeless young man outside their Paris shop, and he becomes Joshua Pearl. When officials question the death of the Pearls’ son, he assumes Joshua’s identity and later joins the French army. As memory and loss accumulate, Joshua seeks relics from his original world, hoping they can prove it exists and help him find his way back to Olia.
