South of Somewhere

Twelve-year-old Mavis’s family is thrown into crisis when her mother is accused of stealing money and disappears before the FBI arrives at their Chicago home. With their accounts frozen, Mavis, her father, brother, and sister move to a small Illinois town to stay with an aunt her father has not been close to. As each sibling responds differently to the upheaval, Mavis takes a babysitting job and struggles with disbelief, anger, and grief. When postcards from her mother begin arriving from tropical places, Mavis hides them from the rest of the family.
