Deer Run Home
Ann Clare LeZotte
Effie is Deaf and uses sign language, but no one in her family has learned it. After she and her older sister move in with their father, Effie begins fifth grade at a new school. Her sign-language interpreter, Miss Kathy, and English teacher, Mr. Bart, offer support; Mr. Bart values Effie’s writing, which reflects sign-language grammar. Effie also befriends Cait, a wheelchair user with cerebral palsy. As concerns grow about neglect at home, Miss Kathy visits and later gains temporary custody of Effie while a hearing begins.
