Soaring Earth
Margarita Engle
In this companion memoir in poems, Margarita Engle recounts her high school and college years. Beginning high school in 1966, she gradually finds a place among quiet, academically minded peers. At UC Berkeley, homesickness and campus unrest connected to the Vietnam War leave her struggling. She leaves school, hitchhikes across the country, spends time in New York City, and returns to California. Community college leads her toward plants and botany, while a class introduces her to Tomás Rivera’s work and renews her interest in poetry. The memoir also follows her changing relationships and her eventual search for dependable love.
