Pet
Akwaeke Emezi
Jam lives in Lucille, a city built after angels banished people known as monsters: those who committed crimes, including crimes that had escaped punishment. Jam, a Black transgender teenager who is selectively nonverbal, has grown up believing monsters no longer exist. When her blood touches one of her mother’s paintings, a horned creature covered in fur and feathers becomes real. Calling itself Pet, it says it has come to find a monster living unnoticed in the community, at Jam’s best friend’s home. Jam joins Pet’s investigation as they confront what justice demands.
