In 1940, ten-year-old Lillia flees Poland with her father and developmentally disabled younger sister after her mother disappears during a raid on the circus where the parents worked as acrobats. The family reaches Shanghai, one of the few places offering refuge to Jews without visas, but lives in harsh conditions among other refugees. As Japan occupies China, food and resources grow scarce. Lillia befriends Wei, a Chinese boy, and several Jewish girls, and secretly dances at a nightclub to earn money for her family. She continues hoping that her mother will be found.
