Snow Angel, Sand Angel

Lois-Ann Yamanaka, illustrated by Ashley Lukashevsky

Claire and her brother Timbo create winter dioramas for school. Timbo uses cotton balls and glitter, while Claire focuses on migrating birds that spend the winter on Hawai‘i’s Big Island. Their parents later take them up Mauna Kea, where the children encounter snow and play in it for the first time. Claire imagines life in a place with regular snowfall, sleds, and mittens. At Hapuna Beach, she and Timbo recreate snowy play with sand and water, making sand angels as sea foam fills their shapes.
