Lakelore
Anna-Marie McLemore
Mexican American, nonbinary teenagers Bastián and Lore both heard stories about a world beneath a lake, until they entered it together as children. Reacquainted years later, they face difficult personal circumstances as Lore prepares to attend Bastián’s school. Lore has recently confronted a bully who targeted them because of dyslexia. Bastián, who has ADHD and has begun testosterone, does not know how to manage injections and feels too ashamed to seek help. They also struggle with anxiety, overthinking, and emotional regulation. On difficult days, Bastián makes papier-mâché alebrijes and sends them into the underwater world, where they become living creatures.
