In 1939, eleven-year-old Marianne Kohn leaves Nazi Germany on a Kindertransport to England. She is a last-minute substitute and arrives in London without the family expecting her. Her wealthy host provides little warmth, and Marianne faces loneliness, cold treatment, and antisemitic comments. At school she makes a friend and writes home, hoping her parents can join her. Evacuated from London during the Blitz, Marianne is separated from that friend and must depend on unfamiliar adults again.
