Pablo loves Ruby, his red pet fish, and finds a library book about a fish that wants to fly so he can read it to her. Soon Ruby seems unwell, and the following morning Pablo’s parents tell him that she has died. He feels sad at school, where his friends share memories in an effort to comfort him. Later, Pablo and his father buy a small red-leaved tree to plant above Ruby’s grave. After a memorial, Pablo reads aloud beside the grave, bringing the book he had hoped to share with Ruby into his goodbye.
