Star of the Class Play

Margaret McNamara, illustrated by Mike Gordon

Nia thinks she is the most important performer in her school play because she is assigned its opening words. She rehearses the line repeatedly with encouragement from her mother. When performance day arrives, however, Nia is too frightened to speak. Away from the audience, her teacher guides her through a breathing exercise. Once she has settled herself, Nia returns to the stage and says her part, welcoming the audience to the play. The story follows her preparation, stage fright, and recovery during a class performance.
