Sumi, an Indian American girl, describes the languages her mother uses in daily life. Her mother speaks Malayalam with Sumi’s grandmother, English with a store cashier, and a blend of both languages with Sumi. Sumi recounts her mother’s childhood in Kerala, India, where Malayalam was spoken at home and English was learned at school before she came to America. Malayalam was also Sumi’s first language, while English became her second through school and her neighborhood. Other relatives speak additional languages.
