My Fade Is Fresh
Shauntay Grant, illustrated by Kitt Thomas
A young Black girl goes to the barbershop knowing exactly what haircut she wants: a fade. Her mother discusses other possibilities with the stylist, and soon other stylists and customers offer suggestions based on their own hairstyles. As the appointment stretches on, the girl’s frustration gives way to anticipation when the haircut begins to resemble what she imagined. Then the salon debates what design should be shaved into the side of her hair.
