Rose wants a classroom star from Mrs. Benson, but the rewards usually go to children who keep tidy desks and wait to be called on. Her last opportunity for a star seems to conflict with an assignment to write thank-you notes to a visiting artist. Rose ultimately receives the recognition she has hoped for, though not because of neatness. The story considers school expectations, creative work, and the different abilities that can be valued.
