Indian American senior Rani Kelkar has always followed her parents’ rule against dating in high school. At an art show, she meets Oliver, a white student exhibiting paintings while she shows photographs from a visit to her grandparents in India. The two begin a secret relationship. Although Oliver is attentive to Rani’s wishes as their relationship becomes sexual, he also uses a racist nickname and pressures her to introduce him to her parents despite her clear refusal. Rani must face her guilt about keeping him outside her family and her anger that he does not respect her boundaries or perspective.
