Seventh grader Stevie attends her community’s summer kickoff festival with her parents when a gunman opens fire, injuring her mother and other people. As her mother remains in a medically induced coma, Stevie’s friends, grandparents, and neighbors care for her. Stevie feels guilty, believing she could have prevented her mother’s injury by agreeing to join her at a fountain. Staying in her mother’s childhood bedroom, she learns more about her mother through poems written when Stevie’s grandfather was dying of AIDS.
