Evergreen is a young squirrel frightened by loud sounds, strangers, heights, swimming, germs, and thunderstorms. When her mother asks her to bring soup to a sick Granny Oak, Evergreen travels through Buckthorn Forest despite those fears. Along the way, she helps a rabbit, retrieves the soup, is caught by a hawk, and meets a frightened toad in a river. Each new challenge prompts Evergreen to tell herself that she can manage it.
