Great Carrier Reef
Jessica Stremer, illustrated by Gordy Wright
This nonfiction picture book follows the conversion of the decommissioned aircraft carrier USS Oriskany into an artificial reef off Florida. Scientists hope the project will help protect reef fish as pollution harms natural coral reefs. Before the ship is sunk, workers remove oil, fuel, wiring, and toxic paint. After it descends to the ocean floor, larvae settle on it and sea creatures move through its former spaces. The book traces how a retired carrier becomes habitat for ocean life.
