Down Came the Rain

After Hurricane Harvey floods their Houston home, Eliza and her parents stay with relatives as she begins the 2017 school year. Her flooded school sends her to Southwest High, where she meets Javier. His home survived the storm, but rain now triggers severe panic attacks. Told through Eliza’s and Javi’s viewpoints, the story follows their developing relationship and their work as co-presidents of an environmental club. With support from the school counselor, Javier learns coping strategies and investigates climate change’s unequal effects on poorer communities of color.
