A boy travels by spaceship with alien passengers to visit his grandmother on a distant planet. During their time together, they explore the area and discover ancient cave paintings. Before he leaves, his grandmother gives him colored pencils and paper that once belonged to his great-grandfather. On the return journey, he uses them to record the view beyond the spaceship window. Details in the illustrations reveal that his grandmother’s planet is Earth and place the story in a future where these drawing materials have become unfamiliar artifacts.
