Rafie transfers to a San Antonio high school expecting to become lead vocalist of Todos Colores, a mostly queer mariachi group. Instead, his audition arrogance leads the teacher to place him in backup behind Rey, a trans Afro-Mexican American singer Rafie met at a competition. Rafie worries that not being the star will fail his late grandfather’s mariachi legacy. When Rey falters during their first contest, Rafie steps in, causing a performance problem but revealing that their voices work well together. Rey is drawn to Rafie despite his rudeness.
