Six years after her younger brother Linh leaves Viet Nam on one of the last flights out during the war, eighteen-year-old Hằng reaches Texas as a refugee determined to find him. At a gas station, she meets LeeRoy, a wealthy young man pursuing his dream of becoming a cowboy, who gives her a ride. Hằng finds Linh living on a ranch under the name David, but he has no memory of her, their family, or Viet Nam. Hằng and LeeRoy take jobs at a neighboring ranch so she can remain nearby and wait for some shared memory to return.
