Adele, a sixteen-year-old biracial girl, attends a boarding school in 1965 Swaziland, where students whose families pay tuition receive preferential treatment. A wealthy new arrival pushes her out of her friend group, and she shares a room with Lottie, a poor student of Zulu heritage. Adele initially resents Lottie’s manners and confrontational response to snubs but comes to value her fearlessness. The disappearance of Lottie’s friend Darnell, who has a developmental disability, becomes increasingly important as Adele tries to understand why her mother left the village where she grew up.
