In December 1950, twelve-year-old Sora lives with her family under Communist rule in North Korea, where she is expected to leave school to care for younger siblings and learn household work. When the war front nears, the family flees south toward relatives in Busan. During a violent attack, Sora and her eight-year-old brother Youngsoo are separated from the rest of their family. As they continue south, Sora makes urgent decisions to keep them alive through starvation and illness.
