Chance: Escape from the Holocaust

Uri Shulevitz recounts his life from age four into his early teens during and after World War II. As Jews fleeing Poland, Uri and his parents reach Russia and are sent to a work camp in Siberia. After their release, they travel south to Turkestan, then move after the war through a displaced-persons camp in Germany and France before immigrating to Israel. Hunger recurs throughout the account, alongside his parents’ efforts to protect and feed him amid displacement and uncertainty.
